June 8, 2009: Test Results

Well, we got Cohen’s results back and it is not as good as we had hoped. Based on the tests that the therapist ran, Cohen's developmental functioning is more than 11 weeks delayed. We were expecting him to be on track based on his adjusted age of 6 weeks, however he is functioning at only a 3-4 week old level.

I don’t think anyone likes to hear that their child isn’t perfect, but instead of feeling sorry for Cohen (or ourselves) we are just trying to get everything in order to get appointments set up to get Cohen on track. Based on the findings, Cohen is more than eligible for the Infant Toddler program, so he will be seen by the developmental therapist once a month for the next 3 years to keep track of his development. In addition to that, he will have access to occupational and physical therapists to help him meet some of the milestones that he is behind on.

So what does all of this mean? Well, no one really knows. We do know that he his behind in hitting some milestones and he has mannerisms that most newborns don’t have. This could mean a variety of things from Cohen just being behind to Cohen actually having a form of Cerebral Palsy. We won’t really know the severity of either until Cohen is much older….so only time will tell. But right now we are giving our little miracle every bit of support that he needs from doctor and therapist appointments to every developmental toy under the sun, and of course all of our unconditional love.
