Cohen’s day got progressively worse after his swallow test. His saturation levels have been fluctuating between 82 and 91, and occasionally dipping to the low 70s. When the alarm sounds, I immediately turn him in front of the blow by oxygen tube and his levels gradually creep up to the mid-90s. They will hang out at 94-96 for 2 minutes, and then back down to low 80s. In addition to that, his pulse rate has been going crazy. He went for 3 hours with a pulse rate of 185-200, with the normal range being 120-160. Needless to say the alarms have been going nuts in room 206 today! And to top it all off, Cohen’s fever has returned and he is at 101.7.
With this information, and after listening to him and deciding he sounded even worse than this morning, Cohen’s primary doctor solidified his stay for tonight. She ordered albuterol treatments every 4 hours and if his saturation levels continue to act up he will be put on nasal cannula.
By sheer luck Cohen got his IV out today, so he is much, much happier. His IV line blew earlier today and his poor hand was all puffy from the profusion of IV fluids. He was completely miserable during the process of removing the IV that the nurses decided to leave it out. Cohen’s primary doctor said the IV can be left out as long as he is taking liquids okay and is taking his antibiotic orally.
He is all tucked in for the night and hopefully a good rest will be what he needs to have a good morning and hopefully a ticket home!
