March 1, 2010: Swallow Study

Cohen’s swallow study went great. For the first part of the test, barium was added to his formula and the radiologist and speech therapist watched on the x-ray machine as Cohen drank from the bottle. In this situation no aspiration occurred. Next up was baby food mixed with barium. Cohen took two bites and was over it, but luckily with those two bites they were able to see no aspiration present either. Finally, diced pieces of banana were coated in barium. The one and only bite Cohen managed to swallow also showed no signs of aspiration. With that, it looks like this is not a case of aspiration pneumonia. So now we are down to the IDD or just a case of bad luck and preemie lungs.
