As of this morning, Cohen earned another night at Gritman. His primary care doctor saw him this morning and was not too impressed with his condition. His oxygen saturations were stable at 91-92, and that is the very bare minimum end of the “acceptable” spectrum. Ideally, they would like him at 95+ because infants can go from fine to worse in a matter of minutes, so having his levels stabilized on the higher end would be much better. His temperature was down to 99.5, but his wheezing and coughing was still causing him great difficulty. The doctor ordered the swallow study to see if he is aspirating what he is eating into his lungs during feeds. The location of this round of pneumonia suggests something along those lines. Additionally, a bunch of blood tests were ordered to see if Cohen has an Immune Deficiency Disease. The doctor suspects one of the 150+ different kinds of IDDs may be the culprit to the number of infections he has had during his first year of life. She said one of the biggest signs is an occurrence of pneumonia twice in one year. I have resisted the urge to research further into what a diagnosis like this would mean after the first site I came across wasn’t so comforting. We are going to wait until we have an answer before pouring over the “what ifs.”
Cohen is resting comfortably and will be spending some time with his Daddy while I go to class. His doctor will be back this afternoon to re-asses his need to spend the night
