May 20-22, 2010: Sandpoint, Idaho

School is out. Finally!! After a busy semester, we decided to head up to Sandpoint to visit family before we left for our summer in San Francisco. The boys had a fantastic time hanging out with Papa Doug and Mema, Auntie Mary, Uncle Jeff and the girls, and of course, Uncle Doug! Here is a list of things we did:

1. Stayed with Papa Doug and Mema:

(Brotherly love on the deck!... Carter throwing rocks with Papa Doug.)

2. Litehouse: We paid a visit to Litehouse and got Cohen’s obligatory photo in “The Mixer.” Cohen made the rounds and said hi to everyone….they were all impressed with how big he was and how well he was doing.

3. The Farm: Carter and Papa Doug bonded at the farm. Carter rode a horse and got to ride on Papa Doug’s new tractor. Talk about little boy heaven!! Cohen was pretty infatuated with the mule. He was screaming and yelling and doing all that he could to climb over me and reach the animal. It was pretty hilarious.

(Carter on a horse!) (Going for a quick ride as the toddler saddle was MIA that day...)

(Cohen's turn! Just kidding, he was only posing)

(Hawkins Boys!)

(What little boy wouldn't love spending quality time with grandpa and a tractor?!)

4. The Dive (x3): A new restaurant opened in Sandpoint and we had to check it out….three times! Everything on the menu is less than $8 and all the games and activities are free. Think: Mechanical bull, foose ball, beer pong, shuffle board, full bar…everything you would want in bar AND kids were allowed in too! Carter “rode” the mechanical bull…but not before his mommy had a quick look at the liability release (which included making some important changes and adding question marks… and they actually accepted it!). Carter was all about it, but as soon as the bull started moving he was over it. It is a fun atmosphere and I’m sure we’ll be back again.

5. . Visit with the Gunters: We headed out to visit Margi and her belly, I mean, her babies. Our friends Margi and Clint are soon to be first time parents…to triplets!! They are the most outgoing and down to earth couple ever. Even through Clint’s status as “commercial star” they keep it real :) We are so excited that they will be welcoming two beautiful baby girls and a little Clint into the world…best part is, Margi’s due date is October 20, 2010! (Carter’s 3rd Birthday!). However, knowing that triplet pregnancies will not, under any circumstance, go to 40 weeks, they will be looking to meet their babies sometime in September. We cannot think of two people better to handle triplets than Clint and Margi. Congrats guys!!

While we were visiting, Margi and Clint got to see what life with toddlers is like. Carter was being a weenie and was “afraid” of the dogs….meanwhile, Cohen, was all about playing with them. He would march over to one of them, stand behind its tail, wrap his arms around the dog’s belly, and they attempt to pick him up. It was truly ridiculous. Our little ant J Once he saw that Cohen was able to play with the dogs and have fun, Carter decided to join in. But if a dog got too close, Carter would squeal and hide.

6. Beach House: John’s birthday was Saturday, so we all headed out to the beach house and Papa Doug cooked John’s prime rib birthday dinner. Auntie Mary, Uncle Jeff, Madison and Taylor, along with Grandma and Uncle Doug all made it out. The cousins had a blast (as usual) playing and Cohen was finally big enough, and mobile enough, to partake in the fun.
7. Emergency Room: Cohen had a minor cough before we went to Sandpoint, and with his history, we don’t allow him much room to “wait and see.” Towards the end of John’s party, Cohen spiked a fever. Lingering cough that suddenly worsens + sudden fever = ER. So, in true Cohen fashion, we headed to Bonner General to get him checked out. Thankfully there was not a soul in the ER that night…but that didn’t prevent our stay from being longer than necessary. The receptionist who took the paper work gave me a funny look, complete with up and down analysis…but being as we were in Sandpoint and have “Hawkins” as a last name…I wasn’t all that surprised. I’m actually getting used to it now….and usually follow up said looks with “Yes, I’m married to John. Doug’s son. The baby.”

We were sent to an exam room immediately and I gave the nurse the run down on Cohen. He didn’t waste a second and hooked Cohen up to the O2 monitor…and what do you know, his O2 sats were in the low 70s. Perfect. That, in combination with the fever, screamed pneumonia. After hooking up some blow-by oxygen, they sent Cohen for a chest x-ray.

Then we wait. And wait. And WAIT. John had arrived while we were waiting for the films to be read…and promptly stated “Huh, I didn’t know ‘so and so worked here.’ I haven’t seen her for years.” …must have been the receptionist.

When the doctor came to tell us what he thought, we had been waiting in an empty ER for 2 hours. (John and I had already discussed driving to Sacred Heart in the event he needed to be admitted, but by this time, we were annoyed that we could have been in Moscow by now with doctors who knew Cohen and his history.) The doctor told us that he couldn’t “really read the films.” He said, “I mean, there is some haziness and shading, but I don’t really know what that means without something to compare it to.” Are you kidding me? Were you googling “chest xray” while we waited for 2 hours?? Ugh. He basically told us to go home and see Cohen’s doctor…all while Cohen’s sats were in the mid-70s. Idiot. Thankfully, as we waited to be discharged, his sats began to improve and his temp was lower, so we decided we would watch him throughout the night and head back to Moscow first thing in the morning.

Other than Cohen’s little detour to Bonner General, we had a fantastic visit to Sandpoint!
