It’s Uncle Doug’s birthday, and he is enjoying himself at Disneyland!
We had a nice visit home (and got a lot accomplished), but it was hard to be away from Cohen for so long!
We got back to Spokane in the afternoon, and finally after 2 weeks of not seeing him, John was able to visit with Cohen! Cohen now has a mobile on his crib for him to look at. This means Occupational Therapy has allowed him to be stimulated for more than just feedings. In the beginning, Cohen’s only job was to sleep and grow, so that is why holds were limited and any sort of extra stimulation was not allowed. Now that Cohen is growing stronger and bigger, he is allowed more awake periods. He was very awake this afternoon and did an excellent job eating!
Speaking of eating, Cohen’s doctor went above Occupational Therapy and wrote orders to allow Cohen to begin nippling. If he is awake at the feeding time, he will either get a bottle or try and breastfeed if I am there. Finally, some progress! As soon as Cohen is taking all feeds orally, he will get that darn NG tube out of his nose. So far he is up to 30cc’s by bottle, but he gets very tired and ends up sleeping through the next feeding (or two!). Also,his color is starting to return to a baby pink, so he avoided the consequence of going on formula for his jaundice. Cohen is on his way to being bigger than Carter. When Carter was born (at 35 weeks) the Carter’s brand preemie clothes were too big, and Cohen at 34 weeks is too long for the preemie outfits with feet! (all the preemie clothes still fit around, though!)
The big news of the day is Cohen’s caffeine has been discontinued. The doctor believes his A&B’s are from reflux and therefore the caffeine is no longer needed. It takes a full week before the caffeine is out of his system, and it is then we will be able to tell if the caffeine is still needed. This is getting Cohen one step closer to coming home!
