Cohen continues to backtrack with his feeds. He did not wake up at all last night for any of his cares, let alone to eat. Occupational Therapy worked with him this morning and determined that with Cohen in the current condition that he is in, nippling him is not safe. In addition to not waking up, he is de-sating and breathing really fast during the feeds, and due to the risk of aspirating the milk into his lungs, we will be backing off the oral feeds for a little bit. Our original plan of removing the NG tube at 36 weeks (tomorrow) is no longer going forward. Rather, we will try to nipple him every third feed if and only if he is awake and alert. The other feeds will be gavaged and we will just have to wait until Cohen gets more energy to attempt oral feeds again. It is frustrating to see him really backtrack. The last two weeks of feeds felt like real progress and now we are starting all over again. Cohen’s doctor doesn’t think this will last too long, but due to the labored breathing and de-sating we are being sent back down to the NICU. If Cohen can’t keep his O2 sats up, he will have to go back on the nasal cannula. It’s a bummer that he has to be moved again, but I am glad we will be back to a place where I have somewhere to be during the day and not just sitting next to Cohen’s bed annoying the nurses because they can’t gossip in my presence :)
Cohen is 5lbs 15.4 oz and 20.5 inches long….he’s the size of a newborn! (okay, a smaller newborn).
