March 31, 2009: 7 Weeks!

These are pictures of Cohen showing off how alert he can be...big eyes and everything!

Cohen is the newest member of Sacred Heart’s 6 Pound Club!
Cohen is officially 36 weeks gestation. He will be considered full term next week and should really be making some progress with his feeds. With that said, his doctor doesn’t foresee us being here for longer than 2 weeks, but he also said he isn’t above keeping Cohen until his due date (or even after) if that is what he needs. Unfortunately Cohen is still fighting his feeds. Today he decided that he would “fake” eat. He took the bottle very well, but instead of swallowing he spit the milk out the side of his cheeks. This type of behavior is seen when the flow of the nipple is too fast for the baby, but Cohen is on the slowest nipple! In addition to fighting the bottle, he is also fighting the boob. He hasn’t shown any interest in breastfeeding for the last 4 days! It is very frustrating and heartbreaking, but I know deep down this is temporary. Regardless, the lactation consultant will be coming up to see if she can help. He is still breathing really really fast while he attempts to eat, and he will be given another few days to regulate it on his own before the doctor intervenes with drug therapy.
I gave Cohen a bath today…all by myself! Um, note to John: This baby is a wiggle worm and bathing him with soap is very difficult and totally a two person task!
Even though we have a few more weeks here, the nursing staff is doing a great job of getting some of the discharge tasks taken care of before the actual date so it is not too crazy on the day we go home. Today Cohen had his hearing checked and he passed with flying colors. He will also be given the Hepatitis B vaccine. Our car seat test has been put on hold until Cohen’s breathing returns to normal during his feeds.
We have settled into our new NICU room. This time around we are in the middle pod, also known as the Central Corral. We had a roommate for a brief hour. Apparently there was a mishap during the c-section and her little pinky toe was almost completely removed…so the neonatologist was in our room putting the little girl’s toe back on. Yikes! I had no clue something like that could happen with a c-section!
A big CONGRATS to my baby sister…she got accepted to Cornell University! ( Sympathy cards can be sent directly to my mom, as she will spend most of her retirement working to pay for my sister’s undergraduate tuition, ha ha. ) It will be a team effort between me, my mom, John and the boys to convince Libby to stay on the west coast. (maybe with a car mom!) I think we can do it, but if she gets into Yale or Princeton I think we’ll be out of luck! Congrats Lizzardbreath!
